You might say my career started back when I was a Kid. I was very curious, I needed to see what made things tick ...Literally. I was always disassembling things. I grew up in a small industrial town with many manufacturers. We would make our rounds and get handouts from the dock workers so there was a good supply of junk to work with.
I entered High School with the thought of working in construction after graduating, after all, my family lived comfortably from my Dad's (Paper Hanging) trade. I somehow knew back then that I wanted to be an electrician. I took classes which concentrated on math and business. I'm still waiting for some of that Trigonometry to be helpful! Don't get the wrong picture... I did (do) have a wild side. I was always a class cut-up - to say the least! I had the opportunity to enroll in a Tech Satellite School (1/2 day at High School & 1/2 day at Tech), so I jumped at it. The first year I took an introduction to Electric plus other classes that would be of benefit. I had Masonry, Carpentry, Plumbing, and Automotive... well we have to keep our work trucks running right? Graduation had come and it was time we were thrown into the working world.
My search for employment as an "Electricians Helper" began. I learned very quickly what the term "runaround" meant. "You need experience to get this Job" I heard at every interview. Just how do you get experience if no one will hire you? I had to settle for a maintenance job in a sign manufacturing / supply company. It provided great mechanical and troubleshooting experience. At nights I worked as a helper fixing TV's, Electronics, and Refrigeration.
Finally that day arrived, my first "Electricians Helper" Job. Frank, if your reading this..." Thanks for giving me a break". I've since hired two helpers fresh out of school and helped give them a start. I believe everything goes full circle in life. My "New" Employer was a company that manufactured Filtering and Pumping Systems. These Systems were built on very large platforms, then shipped around the world. The platforms were placed into existing systems on land and also out at sea. The Specifications and Tolerances were crucial, sometimes having to be within an 1/8 of an inch. We fabricated and wired massive Control Panels, designed and installed Conduit Systems (sometimes being Explosion Proof and/or Earth Quake Proof), and installed High Voltage/ High Horse Power Motors with associated Controls. I worked for 5 years there, eventually handling all phases of Installation and Testing of units. I received a great wealth of experience and knowledge, reading detailed Wiring Schematics, Controls, Motors, Wiring Methods, Testing and Troubleshooting, and much more.
I decided to try working for Electrical Contractors. After working in an industrial atmosphere for years, Residential and Commercial wiring seemed like a walk in the park. Well, I worked for a few different Contractors, covering all the phases of electrical contracting. My boss' all liked my work and I liked all the overtime. I did also developed a small following during these years.
It was time to jump into the pool for myself, so I studied for the electrical examiners test. I felt confident when taking the test that I had covered all the information in the National Electric Code. The studying paid off, on the first go I had passed the exam and was on my way to being in control of my own destiny. That shining day back in March of 1986 was only a step toward something that has become a very rewarding career. Having your own business is very gratifying, what you put into the effort is the key!
